A Little Bit About Me

I’m Angela Deaton.  My 20+ year corporate career began as a bookseller for a major book retailer.  Working in the corporate world has taught me the importance of details, deadlines, and quality work while my background in the book industry has taught me the value of the creativity that great authors possess.  My love of stories has led me to leave the corporate world to collaborate with authors.  My goal is to help authors bring their story to the next level while ensuring readers get the quality product that they deserve.

Editing is Fun!

Many authors dread the editing process.  They are worried that the manuscript they have put their heart and soul into will not be received well by the editor.  They are afraid that it will come back from the editor covered in red lines.  Editing should be energizing, not terrifying.  I’m an author’s biggest cheerleader!  I focus on both the strengths and the areas for improvement and deliver feedback in a positive and constructive manner.  The authors I collaborate with leave the editing process excited to continue on their journey toward publication.

What I Edit

My focus is Romance (and its many subgenres).  Romance is unique.  It taps into the feelings of the characters more than any other genre.  It has specific tropes and conventions that are not seen elsewhere.  And don’t forget the intimate scenes!  Whether there’s lots of steam or no steam, the intimate scenes can make or break the story.  Having an editor that understands the nuances of the genre is critical to success.

I am an active member of the Editorial Freelancers Association and the American Copy Editors Society.

Angela at Cumberland Edits did a developmental edit for my romance novel. She is detailed in all of her work. Angela was able to help me find plot holes and more importantly, find solutions! I had been concerned an editorial review would be emotionally intense but she is kind and friendly! I’m so glad I found Cumberland Edits.
