Developmental Editing
Developmental Editing gives the author editorial insights into and an in-depth assessment of the big picture elements of the story.

What will the author receive?

The author will receive their manuscript with editorial comments notated within the margins of the text.  Story level feedback and editorial suggestions on storyline and plot, character development and arcs, flow, pacing, dialogue, craft considerations, worldbuilding, genre conventions, and overall impressions will be provided in an editorial report.  Two hours of follow-up communication (via email, phone, or video call) is also included.

What is not included?

Developmental Editing focuses on the big picture. Although there may be some line level comments, this will not be the focus of the edit.  Grammar, sentence structure, spelling, and punctuation will not be addressed.

What should the author do before hiring a Developmental Editor?

The author should have completed the story before hiring a Developmental Editor.  At least one round of self-editing before hiring a Developmental Editor is recommended but not necessary.

Can the author obtain a free sample of the Developmental Edit?

A sample of the editorial comments within the manuscript may be provided.  A sample of the editorial report is not available.

Can the author ask specific questions to be considered during the Developmental Edit?

Yes.  A Developmental Edit should be a collaborative process.  The author and editor will meet via video call (or phone or email based on the author’s preference) before the edit begins to ensure the author’s questions and concerns are addressed.

Will the editor be brutally honest?

Yes and no.  The editor will be honest but constructive.  There’s nothing brutal about it!  Every story has its strengths and weaknesses.  Feedback will be given on both in a kind, positive manner.

How long does the Developmental Edit take?

It depends on the length of the book.  A typical turnaround time is anywhere from four to eight weeks.  A quick turnaround can be requested for an additional cost.

What format works best for a Developmental Edit?

The manuscript must be provided in MS Word.

How much will this cost?

Keeping costs affordable is critical to independent authors.  Developmental Editing rates are balanced to meet the needs of the author and the business needs of Cumberland Edits.

$.02 per word

Angela at Cumberland Edits did a developmental edit for my romance novel. She is detailed in all of her work. Angela was able to help me find plot holes and more importantly, find solutions! I had been concerned an editorial review would be emotionally intense but she is kind and friendly! I’m so glad I found Cumberland Edits.
