Line Editing
Line Editing provides the author a sentence and paragraph level edit of the manuscript.

What will the author receive?

The author will receive a marked-up draft of their manuscript with edits and comments focusing on sentence flow, clarity, believability, overused words, telling vs showing, point of view (head-hopping), descriptions, and dialogue.  Obvious fixes to punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure will be included but are not the main focus.  Two hours of follow-up (via email, phone, or video call) is also included.

What is not included?

Line Editing focuses on refining the writing at a paragraph and sentence level.  Although there may be some big picture comments and suggestions, this will not be the focus of the edit. Obvious fixes to punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure will be included but are not the main focus.

What should the author do before hiring a Line Editor?

The author should have completed and self-edited the story to the best of their ability before hiring a Line Editor.  A Developmental Edit that focuses on the big picture elements of the story prior to a Line Edit is beneficial but not necessary.

Can the author obtain a free sample of the Line Edit?

Yes.  A sample up to 1000 words can be provided upon request.

Will the editor be brutally honest?

Yes and no.  The editor will be honest but constructive.  There’s nothing brutal about it!  Every story has its strengths and weaknesses.  Feedback will be given on both in a kind, positive manner.

Can the author ask for specific elements to be considered during the Line Edit?

Yes.  A Line Edit should be a collaborative process.  The author and editor will meet via video call (or phone or email based on the author’s preference) before the edit begins to ensure the author’s questions and concerns are addressed.

How long does the Line Edit take?

It depends on the length of the book.  A typical turnaround time is anywhere from four to eight weeks.  A quick turnaround can be requested for an additional cost.

What format works best for a Line Edit?

The manuscript must be provided in MS Word.

How much will this cost?

Keeping costs affordable is critical to independent authors.  Line Editing rates are balanced to meet the needs of the author and the business needs of Cumberland Edits.

$.03 per word

Collaborating with Angela on my debut novel has been an invaluable experience. As my mentor and cheerleader, she provided both copy and line edits for my manuscript, offering detailed and constructive feedback that greatly improved its quality. I appreciated not only her expertise but also her calming presence throughout this journey, making it less stressful and even enjoyable. Working with such a wonderful person has been a true pleasure, and I am grateful for her guidance and support.
